Knight in Armor

I left my client site around 3:45 on Friday and headed north to the airport to pick up my best friend at the Salt Lake airport for a weekend of girl stuff and skiing. Horns started honking at me--not unusual in Utah when one isn't going at least 10 miles over the speed limit, although the honking is usually accompanied by the Utah state wave--involves the middle finger being wagged at a furious speed. This time the hand gestures were pointed at my back tire which was going flat. Great. Rental car and all.

Utah kindness had me, though. As soon as I pulled over a guy pulled up behind me with yellow lights flashing--he had seen me slow down and swerve to the side, so he stopped to see if he could help. At the time, I was on the phone with my husband, who from Texas was warning me that 'there are crazy people in Utah, too' and not to trust anyone but AAA. Nice warning but as it was 4 PM on Friday, along I-15 I wasn't really worried about being abducted or worse.

This was one of those kind times when trusting people, and saying 'yes' to freebies (TAW, p. 114, #9) was a good thing. Jim, my knight in red pick up had just gotten off work from the Checkers Auto Parts in Orem. Not only did he stop, but he changed my tire in minutes seeming to be embarrassed by the many 'thank you's' I stuttered. While he was getting the spare on, a guy from the Utah Department of Transportation also stopped--he pulled his truck up, with more flashing yellow lights to make sure the oncoming traffic stayed away from us.

Crazy people in Utah? Yup. And kind ones too.
